Mats Hummels is Van Gaal's dream signing

Will United land Hummels?
Will United land Hummels?.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has identified Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels as his dream Manchester United signing, but believes Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen represents a more realistic transfer target.

This has been reported by Goal.com, who have suggested that the new United boss is determined to add to his defensive line in this market.

United defence

It's not surprising that the Dutchman is looking to add to his defence before the start of the Premier League season, with a number of stars having departed the Theatre of Dreams in recent months.

United lost experienced trio Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra, whilst Alex Buttner departed the club in favour of a move to Russian club Dynamo Moscow. And, so far in this window, Van Gaal has only added teenager Luke Shaw to his defence, with the youngster set to take up the left wing-back position.

United certainly look vulnerable at centre-half, with Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling the only real first-team players in that position. It remains to be seen as to whether Van Gaal can add to his defence in the coming weeks.

Hummels

A move for Hummels, however, seems unlikely, despite the United boss having identified the World Cup winner as his dream signing. Borussia Dortmund certainly won't want to lose the German star, who has been rated at around £20 million, but it's uncertain as to whether United will step up their interest in the player in the near future.

The highly rated Bundesliga star would certainly improve United in defence, as he could help the likes of Jones and Co. flourish at the Theatre of Dreams. His experience would also help United as they look to improve after last season's failure under David Moyes.

Realistic target

If Van Gaal fails in his pursuit of Hummels, then he may have to make do with Belgian ace Vermaelen. The defender has struggled in recent time at the north London outfit, having failed to dislodge Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker as the club's No.1 centre-back pairing.

A move to Old Trafford, then, could hand the Gunners skipper a new lease of life as he looks to get his career back on track. Vermaelen could be reunited with former teammate Robin van Persie at the club, if he makes the switch this summer.
