Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has reserved the No.7 shirt at Old Trafford for Chilean superstar Arturo Vidal, reports The Metro.

Citing reports from La Tercera newspaper, it appears that the shirt made famous by the likes of George Best, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. could be handed to the Juventus midfielder this summer.

United wide-man Antonio Valencia was the last player to occupy the shirt at the Theatre of Dreams, but he reverted back to the No.25 jersey after a disappointing campaign in the 2012/13 season.

And now, with reports from Chile suggesting that Vidal has asked to join United, having already had a preliminary medical at the club, it appears that he will follow the likes of Ronaldo and Co. into wearing the shirt for the foreseeable future. The same report has suggested that Dutch boss Louis van Gaal wants to tie up the deal with the Juventus man as soon as possible, as his preparations for the new season continue.

Major coup

The potential capture of Vidal would certainly represent a marquee signing for the club, as they look to put last season's nightmare behind them. The Red Devils have already invested in new recruits in this window, having signed Luke Shaw from Southampton and Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao.

It remains to be seen as to whether the United boss further adds to his squad in this window, with United fans hoping the club further improve their back-line after the departures of Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Co. But, without a doubt, the signing of Vidal would prove United's biggest one of the summer.

United midfield

Vidal, then, could be set to partner Herrera in the middle of the park at Old Trafford next term, as United look to climb the table under the new regime. The £40m rated star would certainly improve the club's midfield after a number of players struggled to make an impact last term.

The likes of Tom Cleverley, Marouane Fellaini and Darren Fletcher all failed to prove their worth under the last regime, and Van Gaal has quickly made moves in this window to strengthen in that area.
