Dutch star Stefan de Vrij has revealed that Manchester United didn't want to sign him this summer, reports The Express.
The defender, who departed Feyenoord for Italian outfit Lazio, played a key role under Louis van Gaal for the Netherlands at this summer's World Cup, and was heavily linked with a summer switch to Old Trafford. However, the 22-year-old has insisted that the Red Devils were not one of the clubs interested in his signature.
The defender has, however, insisted that Lazio were the team most interested in his services before this summer's World Cup, which influenced his final transfer decision.
"I am very happy to be here in a big club and in a big city,’ De Vrij said.
"Lazio were the only club that showed a real interest in me before the World Cup.
"After the World Cup, I evaluated other options but I received the best feelings from Lazio and I’m happy to be here."
"Several clubs contacted me, I don’t think it’s fair to say the names. I can say that Manchester United were not one of them."
It's slightly surprising that United boss Van Gaal didn't swoop for the 22-year-old, as he has a lack of options in his back-line at the Old Trafford outfit. A number of experienced defenders left the Theatre of Dreams at the end of last season, with the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra all moving on.
Alex Buttner, meanwhile, also left the club as he joined Russian club Dynamo Moscow after struggling to break into the United first team. United have, though, already added to their defensive line in this window, having secured the services of teenager Luke Shaw from Southampton.
The youngster looks set to play a key role at the club next term, as Van Gaal installs a 3-5-2 formation at the club. In central defence, United are certainly in need of added competition with Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling the only real first-team centre-half at the club.
United fans will certainly be hoping the club further improve their defence before the start of the new season, with the club in need of some added experience. It remains to be seen, however, as to whether the club step up their interest in possible targets in the coming weeks.
Van Gaal will be hoping to put his squad together in time for this month's big Premier League kick-off, as United play host to Swansea City on the opening weekend of the season.
