Quality option needed

Arsenal are clearly lacking a quality option in this area, with incumbents Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini not offering quite what Arsene Wenger desires, and recruiting world class player for this position would complete a very good summer.

Many players have been linked, perhaps most notably Sami Khedira - the German World Cup winner - yet it may well be that Carvalho is the man to assume this role, if reports are to be believed.

It has been claimed Tony Leen, sports editor of the Irish Examiner, that the Sporting youngster is emerging as the most likely signing for Arsenal, and that a deal could be concluded before the transfer deadline.

Leen tweeted: “Inside word is that the gap between Sporting & Arsenal is narrowing. Whether Arsene will go the extra mile....Your guess is as good as mine!”

Manchester United interest

Manchester United had long been expected to be the club to sign the coveted 22-year-old, with various reports claiming the club had agreed a deal worth £37.5 million to bring Carvalho to Old Trafford.

However, it would appear Louis van Gaal’s reported pursuit of Arturo Vidal, a story that continues to run, may have allowed Arsenal to steal in with regards Carvalho, and the north London club may perform quite a coup with this one.
