Micah Richards was guilty of a truly horrendous penalty miss during Manchester City's shootout defeat to Olympiacos in the semi-finals of the Champions Cup in Minneapolis on Saturday night.
Reigning Premier League champions City - who were also defeated on penalties by title rivals Liverpool in New York last week - had taken a 2-1 lead over the Greek giants at TCF Bank Stadium following goals from Stevan Jovetic and Aleksandr Kolarov, but a Dimitris Diamantakos brace ensured that the Greek giants took the pre-season clash to spot-kicks.
The shootout was tense, with Kolarov and David Silva successfully converting and Joe Hart making his considerable presence felt with two impressive saves.
Richards was unable to keep his cool in a sudden death situation, however, and blazed his all-important effort way over the crossbar in truly dismal fashion.
The penalty was so bad that Richards even felt compelled to issue an apology to supporters via his Twitter account, with the player promising that he had in fact been practicing from 12 yards.
Watch: Richards' woeful penalty miss
Such a shocking miss will have done preciously little to help boost Richards' bid to claim a regular starting berth under Manuel Pellegrini.
The 26-year-old former England international has seen his career at the Etihad Stadium stall drastically in recent times, with a combination of injury and poor form having significantly reduced his influence.
All might not be lost for Richards, however, who may be afforded the welcome opportunity to start afresh elsewhere this summer with Premier League trio Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle United having been linked with his signature.
