Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has insisted that he can handle Robin van Persie's fitness ahead of the new season.
As reported by the Express, the Red Devils boss – who gave the Dutchman an extended break following his endeavours at this summer's World Cup – has revealed that it's likely that Van Persie will miss the start of the new campaign.
It appears then that Van Gaal will put the striker on a fitness regime when he returns to the club following his holiday. The Dutchman has also insisted that Van Persie, just like the rest of his squad, wants to play in every game.
Speaking to reporters, Van Gaal said: "When a player has been on holiday for three weeks they have to train.
"I'm sorry but players have to train and Robin needs a full training regime behind him before he can play again. People can criticise me for my decision but I know what to do with players who have had three weeks' holiday.
"Hopefully, Robin will get his fitness back very fast but, for now, he won't play.
"Robin wants to play every game, I know that, but so do the other 30 players in the squad."
United still have an array of talent in their forward line, despite Van Persie's fitness issue. The likes of Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez have all looked sharp during pre-season, and look set to battle it out for a starting berth against Swansea City on the opening weekend of the new season.
Manchester United fans, however, will be desperate to see Van Persie return as soon as possible, as the club look to put last season's nightmare campaign behind them under the new regime.
