Arturo Vidal’s proposed move to Manchester United has been thrown into doubt by Juventus teammate Giorgio Chiellini.
The Italian international centre back, who was at the heart of the Luis Suarez ‘biting’ incident at this summer’s World Cup, is confident the Chilean will reject the advances of interested parties.
Teammates next season
And, the 29-year-old also cleared up his own future at the club, insisting he plans to stay with the Old Lady for ‘a long time yet’.
"I am convinced Arturo Vidal will stay with us," he told reporters ahead of the club's tour of South East Asia - which the midfielder has been included on.
"My contract is not formal, but I think it’s safe to say I will be a Juventus player for a long time yet.”
Chiellini’s comments on Vidal could be significant, given that the midfielder has been heavily-linked with a move to Manchester United since the transfer window opened at the start of July.
Indeed, the Red Devils had reportedly done preliminary medical checks on the 27-year-old ahead of his proposed £40million move to Old Trafford. If that is the case, did the club get ahead of themselves?
The move may not be as close as originally thought, and Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal might need to go back to the drawing board over his remaining transfer plans.
Other summer signings
The former Premier League champions have already been busy this summer, adding Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera in big-money deals. And, they’ve slotted into the side quickly as part of a successful pre-season tour in America.
The Red Devils have won all four matches Stateside, including one on penalties, and now face Liverpool in their final match of the tour tomorrow night (Monday).
It doesn’t look like there will be a transfer announcement to accompany the kick-off however, and more work will need to be done behind the scenes to convince Vidal that Manchester United is the right club for him rather than staying in Serie ‘A’.
