Arsenal are preparing a €30 million bid for Sporting Lisbon starlet William Carvalho, as Arsene Wenger closes in on that elusive defensive midfielder signing. (O Jogo)

The 21-year-old is widely regarded as an up and coming star of the future in Portugal, and featured for his country at the World Cup in Brazil this summer.

Carvalho has already been heavily linked with a move to England, as Manchester United have been credited with an interest in acquiring the player's services.

However, it's the Gunners that now appear most likely to snare the combative midfield star, with the Portuguese press suggesting that a big money bid is on its way from North London.

The prospective deal would cap an impressive summer transfer window for Arsenal, having already secured the signatures of Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy, David Ospina and Calum Chambers, as Wenger prepares for a serious tilt at the PL title this season.
