Everton boss Roberto Martinez could make an £8 million move for Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley, according to The Daily Mail.
The report has suggested that the player's future at Old Trafford is currently uncertain with new boss Louis van Gaal ready to axe a number of players at the end of the week, following the club's tour of the US.
It appears, then, that Roberto Martinez, who previously helped Cleverley progress in the 2010/11 season at Wigan Athletic, could link up with the Manchester United man once again on Merseyside.
Martinez will certainly be keeping a close eye on developments at Old Trafford in the coming days, with Cleverley, who has also been linked with a move to Arsenal in this transfer window, hoping that he will be part of Van Gaal's plans for the 2014/15 campaign. United and Everton have been involved in a number of transfer deals in the last couple of years, with the likes of Marouane Fellaini and Darron Gibson having moved between the two clubs.
The United midfielder has endured a difficult period at the Theatre of Dreams in recent years, having struggled to hold down a place in the first team on a regular basis. Last season, under David Moyes, the 24-year-old failed to make an impact, and was the subject of criticism.
Cleverley then missed out on England's squad for the World Cup, as his form continued to dip under Moyes. With Van Gaal now at Old Trafford, however, Cleverley will be desperate to prove his credentials under the new regime.
The midfield has certainly been a problem area for Manchester United in recent years. Last season, along with Cleverley, a number of United's midfielders struggled to make an impact as the club flopped.
Michael Carrick - who enjoyed a fine 2012/13 season - was unable to replicate his best form last term, and has already been ruled out for the start of this campaign. Marouane Fellaini, meanwhile, who struggled in his debut season at the club, may struggle to find a place under Van Gaal, and has yet to feature in pre-season following this summer's World Cup.
United have, though, already added to their midfield, having secured the signature of Ander Herrera from Spanish outfit Bilbao, but it remains to be seen as to whether the club will press ahead with any other transfer targets in the near future.
