The search for a defensive midfielder continues for Arsenal. Manager Arsene Wenger has stated that he is in the hunt still to bring in a fresh player to fill in this position.
We have heard a whole list of targets rumoured to be making a move to the Emirates including William Carvalho, Paul Pogba, Morgan Schneiderlin, Luiz Gustavo and Sami Khedira.
However, all these deals will cost the Gunners a hefty fee and the boss may settle with what he's got.
The four signings of Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy, Calum Chambers and David Ospina give Arsenal the added quality that has lacked and squad depth which is always important.
But none of these signings fill the hole in front of the defence. Arsenal fans want Wenger to spend big on a defensive midfielder but as we all know Wenger, he may look for the cheaper option.
Loan deal imminent?
Reports in France suggest that Maxime Gonalons is making his way to north London. The French international who currently plays for Lyon has made 143 appearances scoring six goals.
Although this goalscoring record doesn't seem impressive at all; does this not show that Gonalons performs his job in staying back and covering the back four.
Unlike Mikel Arteta, Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey who love a run forward and aren't defined defensive players, Gonalons just sits in the whole and intercepts everything that tries to go past him.
Last season we saw how the free transfer of Mathieu Flamini helped the Arsenal team but his age and injury status doesn't help and shows that Flamini cannot be used as a long term player.
Gonalons provides the exact same quality and back up but is far younger being 25. He is an experienced player and one Wenger has looked at before.
When it comes to the transfer fee, it is not as much as you would perceive it to be; Wenger is looking to bring in the Frenchman on a loan deal. Lyon didn't get Champions League qualification last year so if an offer was made, Gonalons and his agent will be likely to push a move through.
The reports do not stop there as after the loan deal, Arsenal may have the option to purchase the player for as little as £6.5 million.
Should Arsenal just sign him for this price now? Is it worth it or do they go for a bigger name like Khedira? Whatever the case, Wenger seems to have his targets and we will see in the next few weeks who he signs.
