Louis Van Gaal arrived at Old Trafford and immediately imposed himself on the team with a radical change of tactics. Van Gaal got rid of the 4-4-2 system famously used by former managers Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes and decided to enforce the 3-5-2 formation that worked wonders for the Netherlands during the World Cup.
Pre-season has seen Manchester United record some impressive victories against the likes of Real Madrid and Liverpool and the new formation has instantly made the team play a whole lot better than last season. Undoubtedly the change of tactics has worked well for the Red Devils and the new formation is is here to stay.
The formation employs the use of three central defenders and two wing backs on either side of the three-man defence. Luke Shaw is expected to fill in the left wing back slot and Ashley Young has proved that he can also excel in that position during the course of pre-season.
However with young Rafael da Silva injured, Antonio Valencia is the only other player who is capable of playing in the right wing back position. Therefore Manchester United should act face and sign Barcelona full back Dani Alves to fill that role.
Despite his recent dip in form, Dani Alves is still considered to be a world-class player. The Brazilian has won several trophies for the club during his six years at the Nou Camp and is one of the most attacking full backs in the world. The right wing back slot would be perfect for a player of his nature giving him more freedom to play his natural attacking game which he is renown for playing. With a vast amount of experience at the top level, he can offer guidance and advice to other young players at the club like Rafael.
Past his best?
At the age of 31, Dani Alves may be past his peak but remains a safe bet to perform consistently. He only has a year left on his contract with Barcelona and the Catalan giants are reportedly willing to offload him for a mere £5 million. He would serve as the perfect short term signing for Van Gaal till the time Rafael can improve his game.
Fierce rivals Liverpool are reportedly keen to sign Dani Alves and therefore Manchester United must act fast and secure one of the bargains of the summer.
Do you think Dani Alves would be a good signing for Manchester United?
