Liverpool are ready to offer Inter Milan £16m for Argentine striker Mauro Icardi.
According to the Daily Star, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has identified Icardi as his next top target following the failed move for Queens Park Rangers forward Loic Remy.
Rodgers has been busy putting the £75m received from the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona to good use, buying in the likes of Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren from Southampton.
But he's still on the lookout for a new striker despite the addition of Rickie Lambert. Remy was close to completion before a complication regarding his medical led to the cancellation of the deal.
As a result, Rodgers has been forced to look elsewhere, and he's turned to Inter Milan, the club he snapped up Coutinho from for a bargain in the January 2013 transfer window.
The Brazilian is on the cusp of agreeing a new Liverpool contract, on much improved terms, after establishing himself as a key part of the new-look Reds side under Rodgers.
Italian newspaper reports claim Icardi is being lined by Liverpool, after Inter Milan completed the signing of Pablo Osvaldo from Southampton. The arrival of Osvaldo could squeeze out Icardi, a talented if inconsistent 21-year-old.
But Liverpool are not the only club interested in the Argentina forward. Big spending Monaco have plenty of cash to spend after the sale of James Rodriguez, and they are exploring their options with the transfer deadline less than four weeks away.
Stoke City have already made one adventurous move in the transfer market this summer, completing the capture of once highly rated Barcelona starlet Bojan. Icardi has also been linked with Mark Hughes at the Britannia Stadium as the Welshman continues to move the club away from its associations with long-ball football under previous boss Tony Pulis.
Liverpool slipped to a 3-1 defeat to rivals Manchester United in the International Champions Cup in Miami on Monday evening. Other than the final defeat, it was a successful trip for Rodgers, and they return to face Borussia Dortmund in their final warm-up at Anfield on Sunday August 10.
