Southampton gave a couple of transfer clues to their fans by announcing their squad numbers for the coming season, via their official site.
Rickie Lambert's number seven and Dejan Lovren's number five are the two high-profile numbers that have not been given to a member of the squad, and surely point to potential incomings.
With new signings Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic and Ryan Bertrand receiving numbers 11,19 and 21 respectively, it certainly points to new arrivals.
Following the departure of Lovren, who joined Liverpool this summer, it was obvious that Southampton were going to reinforce their back line as a result.
With a lack of movement in the press though, some fans had began to question whether Ronald Koeman would be happy to go with Jose Fonte and Maya Yoshida with just Jos Hooiveld in reserve.
The announcement though will quell those rumours, and may increase speculation about potential signings.
Celtic's Virgil van Dyk has been linked previously, as has Argentina defender Marcos Rojo and Aston Villa's Ron Vlaar. With Southampton almost definitely in the market for a defender, it could well be that the number five shirt is filled in the near future.
When talisman Lambert also joined home town club Liverpool, speculation started over who would replace the man and the goals he provided.
Pelle arrived from Feyenoord, but having been handed the number 11 shirt, Lambert's successor, it seems, has yet to walk through the doors at St. Mary's.
Norwich winger Nathan Redmond is one such candidate who has been linked to the club, although it remains to be seen if a winger would be handed the number seven shirt. Manchester United's Javier Hernandez is reportedly on Koeman's shopping list, and if he can tempt the Mexican forward to join the club he may well give him the number seven to go with it.
