Chelsea are looking to make the best of a bad situation with regards to Real Madrid’s increasing interest in Petr Cech, by preparing to negotiate a scenario wherein Raphael Varane heads the other way.
According to the Daily Express Jose Mourinho is well aware that his former club has taken a liking to Cech and, given the fact that Thibaut Courtois is now also an option at Stamford Bridge, could work the Czech international’s departure into his plans. For some time now it’s been a subject of mass debate, whether or not Courtois and Cech would be able to coexist in west London, but now Mourinho could end up orchestrating a tricky situation to suit his needs.
It’s said that The Special One still remains keen on luring Varane to Chelsea, as a long-term replacement for club stalwart John Terry, but he will know that at the moment that route is blocked by Madrid’s plans to make him a key first-team star. As such he will look to use Los Blancos’ interest in landing Cech to make a switch for Varane more feasible, though whether or not Carlo Ancelotti will allow that to become the case remains to be seen.
The goalkeeping predicaments
In a coincidental turn of events both Chelsea and Madrid seem to find themselves with conundrums as to who will be wearing their respective No.1 jerseys next term. At Stamford Bridge Mourinho currently has arguably two of the best stoppers around at his disposal, but therein lies the problem.
With neither Courtois nor Cech ready to be a backup option only it would appear that one will have to leave. Though in an ideal world Mourinho would look to use one as his primary choice and the other as an over-qualified reserve, the reputations of both men prohibit that from being possible.
At the Santiago Bernabeu it’s a different situation entirely, with Keylor Navas having been bought in already following his excellent World Cup appearances with Chile. Meanwhile Iker Casillas and Diego Lopez are both being pushed towards the exit door, and Ancelotti is thought to be in the market for a replacement in between the sticks.
Possibility of a deal
Whilst it’s true that Madrid have shown interest in Cech, Mourinho is surely over-estimating their intentions if he believes they would part ways with Varane.
The France centre-back, who is also wanted by Manchester United and valued at around £20million, is one of the most promising assets in Europe, and Florentino Perez’s has made a name for himself by buying in top talents rather than letting them go.
