This week’s episode of NXT saw the opening two matches of the NXT Tag Team Championship tournament, where the winning team will try to wrangle the gold off The Ascension at NXT Takeover II on September 11 which will be live on the WWE Network.

We already know who the winners of the tournament are, the Divas Championship match as well as the main event for NXT Takeover II will be. This is because NXT is always pre-taped weeks in advance, however no spoilers for future shows or events will be posted until the event itself takes place.

The night kicked off with Jason Jordan and Tye Dillinger taking on the team of Enzo Amore and Big Cass, as always an entertaining promo from Big Cass and Enzo as the realest guys in the room talk about how they’re stars and that they take meteor showers. Big Cass then took the microphone and told Jordan and Dillinger how they would run through the tag team tournament like the Kool-Aid man runs through a brick wall, before the usual ‘S-A-W-F-T’ chant to start the match.

Match One (NXT Tag Team Championship Tournament): Jason Jordan and Tye Dillinger vs. Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady

This was my favourite match of the night as it was an action-packed and fast-paced bout, Big Cass used his superior size to his advantage before Dillinger and Jordan dominated Enzo for a while; Dillinger even hit an incredible super kick to knock Enzo Amore out cold which the fans were surprised by.

The finish was also fantastic, Enzo was in the corner and was about to eat a spear, only for Big Cass to dive in and block it. Jason Jordan had Enzo Amore on his shoulders and about to finish the match until Big Cass hit a big boot on Jordan and a dazed Enzo landed on Jordan for the pin; Enzo Amore and Big Cass advanced to the semi-finals.

Result: Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady defeat Jason Jordan and Tye Dillinger

We go backstage where Renee Young is standing with Sami Zayn, Zayn says his partner tonight isn’t medically cleared to compete so it looks as if he could be on his own against Tyson Kidd and Justin Gabriel. Gabriel and Kidd enter the frame and interrupt him and make fun of Sami a little before saying he has no friends, and the they remember what happened the last time Sami Zayn was left alone inside the ring with The Ascension.

Sami Zayn kindly reminds the duo that the last time he faced both of them, he made them both tap to the Koji Clutch. Adam Rose and the Rosebuds interrupted the interview and told Sami he isn’t alone, and would team up with him in the tournament before Zayn left with the Rosebuds.

Match Two: CJ Parker vs. Xavier Woods

CJ Parker came out first and talked his movement now becoming more culturally relevant and that we fear the message, Xavier Woods cut him short to start the match as Woods continues to impress.

Woods would have liked a victory against Parker after losing to him last time out and his aggressive style showed he meant business but Parker showed resistance, throwing Woods into the ropes before hitting a spinning slam to pick up the win.

Result: CJ Parker defeats Xavier Woods

Match Three: Bayley vs. Eva Marie

The fans made their feelings clear towards Eva Marie, chanting ‘you can’t wrestle’ at every opportunity they could find. Bayley kept this match flowing well and it was clear which direction this was going in.

Eva Marie did wear Bayley down a little but she still picked up the win by hitting the the Bayley-to-Belly suplex for the victory.

Result: Bayley defeats Eva Marie

Main Event (NXT Tag Team Championship Tournament): Justin Gabriel and Tyson Kidd vs. Adam Rose and Sami Zayn

Tyson Kidd continues his impressive heel run and made us believe he has a genuine hatred for Adam Rose. As you can imagine it was a very good, technical wrestling match with three fantastic wrestlers involved. Gabriel and Kidd wore down Adam Rose whilst Sami Zayn continued to grow frustrated on the apron.

At long last Adam Rose tagged in Sami Zayn as he took out both Kidd and Gabriel. Adam Rose took out both men off the top rope before throwing Gabriel into the ring, walking into an impressive Helluva Kick from Sami Zayn to get the cover and the victory; Sami Zayn and Adam Rose advance to the semi-finals.

Result: Adam Rose and Sami Zayn defeat Justin Gabriel and Tyson Kidd

With Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady as well as Sami Zayn and Adam Rose through to the semi-finals, the third and fourth round matches in the first round will take place next week with The Vaudevillians and Kalisto and Sin Cara yet to compete.
