This latest information comes courtesy of the Express, who claim say that Van Gaal has identified former Arsenal star Song as a potential Vidal alternative if the Chile international is deemed too risky a purchase by the United boss.
Van Gaal has concerns over Vidal’s right knee - the 27-year-old underwent surgery in May - and will pull the plug on the deal if the Old Trafford medical staff advise against his acquisition.
Song wants Manchester United move
Song will be hoping that proves to be the case. The Cameroon international is reportedly holding out for a move to Manchester United, but will be snubbed by Van Gaal if the Vidal deal goes ahead as planned.
Chelsea have also been linked in recent months, although Jose Mourinho’s interest has cooled considerable since the purchase of Song’s ex-Barcelona team-mate Cesc Fabregas, while Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is believed to be keeping tabs on the 26-year-old’s situation.
Song has also been linked with a loan move to AC Milan, but this appears to be the least appealing option for the central midfielder.
Song flourished in the Premier League
The African flourished in the Premier League with Arsenal, and enjoyed a superb final season in England before securing a dream move to the Camp Nou in 2012.
Van Gaal’s interest indicates that he believes Song can get back to that level with Manchester United, who are in desperate need of another central midfielder despite the £29 million signing of Spaniard Ander Herrera.

Song: Low on confidence and out of form
However, it’s been a while since Song produced his best form. His dream move to Barcelona has unfolded into something of a nightmare.
Most of his 65 appearances for the La Liga outfit have come from the substitutes’ bench, while there has been no indication that his situation will change under the management of Luis Enrique, who is keen to sell the player before the transfer window closes.
Song’s performances at the recent World Cup finals in Brazil show this is a player extremely low on confidence and out of form.
He bowed out of the showpiece international tournament in disgrace after elbowing Croatia’s Mario Mandzukic in a bizarre off-the-ball incident in Cameroon’s second match of the group stages.
