Chelsea's new star striker Diego Costa was very lucky to escape last night's friendly against Fenerbahce without serious injury after a genuine horror tackle from Bruno Alves, who jumped into a two-footed lunge that somehow only warranted a yellow card.
Costa came up against the Portuguese veteran in a physical battle that was never likely to live up to its friendly tag, but even so a quite outrageous Alves challenge on 28 minutes came from nowhere during a fairly routine 2-0 victory for the Blues.
Alves jumped in and got his studs on the ball with a quite ridiculous tackle, but thankfully for Chelsea fans Costa jumped out of the way and then quite surprisingly held his temper to continue a match in which he gave Blues fans a showcase of his skills with a wonderful solo goal.
£32m man in fine pre-season form
The Spanish international probably irked Alves with a tremendous opening goal, darting beyond two tackles before calmly slotting the ball into the bottom corner from close range.
Branislav Ivanovic got Chelsea's second in a 45-minute clash that formed part of a three-team tournament in Turkey held to raise money for victims of the Soma mining disaster.
The charity clash proved to be a useful exercise for the Blues as Costa shone and Andre Schurrle got involved for the first time since returning from his World Cup winning efforts for Germany, while Filipe Luis and Didier Drogba also featured in a 1-0 defeat to Besiktas in their second match of the evening.
Jose Mourinho's men will now switch to Budapest ahead of Sunday night's friendly with Ferencvaros before facing Real Sociedad at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, in their final pre-season action before a Premier League opener against Burnley a week Monday.
