Southampton manager Ronald Koeman confirmed his interest in defensive duo Florin Gardos and Marcos Rojo, with a defender seemingly a top transfer target.
Following the sales of Luke Shaw, Dejan Lovren and Calum Chambers this summer, Southampton have brought in Ryan Bertrand but are still one or two short at the back.
But Koeman is definitely on the case, and is seemingly closing in on his top targets.
Rojo deal ongoing
When asked about the interest in Marcos Rojo, the Argentine defender who starred at the summers World Cup, the Dutch legend confirmed that he was pursuing the player, but could not give an update on the current progress.
“It’s more questions for the chairman and Les Reed.” he said.
Rojo has been identified as a target due to his versatility of being able to play at both centre-back and left-back comfortably, but after a strong showing at the World Cup, his club Sporting Lisbon are not willing to let him go on the cheap.
Gardos is a new name in the frame and has come out of nowhere. The 6ft 4in giant currently plays for Steaua Bucharest, but reports in Romania say that a deal was done, although Koeman told the Daily Echo he had not yet signed a contract.
“We are interested in the player but until now they haven’t told me that it’s signed or it’s OK. I don’t know but we are interested, that is true.” Koeman confirmed.
The Romanian has represented his country 11 times and has amassed 122 appearances for Steaua in four years at the club including Champions League matches. Such experience could be vital for Southampton this coming season, and at just 25-years-old there is still room for him to improve further.
