Zlatan Ibrahimovic pulled off an embarrassingly bad open goal miss in Paris Saint-Germain’s opening Ligue 1 fixture of the 2014/15 season against Reims.
It was altogether a disappointing evening for the defending champions, as they threw away an early lead and then could not find the winner after drawing level midway through the second half.
Ibrahimovic is undoubtedly PSG’s main man in attack and he could have had four goals in the 2-2 draw, as he scored both goals, missed a penalty and managed to hit the post when presented with a clear open goal just a few yards out.
A little different from the norm
We at GMS are more used to seeing and posting videos of the former Barcelona, Juventus and Ajax man doing something outrageously skilful, but this time we are confronted with something outrageously embarrassing.
A whirlwind first 20 minutes in the match had Ibrahimovic’s opener, the missed penalty and the sensational open goal blunder – which you can watch here, thanks to the official Ligue 1 YouTube account…
PSG boss Laurent Blanc will have been hoping for a more successful opening week to the defence of the club’s title, but there is little to suggest anything other than a repeat of their glory will happen this season.
Especially as main rivals AS Monaco have sold one of their leading stars in James Rodriguez to Real Madrid, and there are consistent rumours that Radamel Falcao, who scored in their 2-1 defeat at home to Lorient in the opening round, could follow his Colombia teammate.
For the moment, however, let us just dwell on the pleasure that comes with seeing a player so ridiculously talented do something so ridiculously poor.
Marco Verratti, who laid the ball off to present Ibrahimovic with the gaping goal, was already wheeling away in celebration – his face was a picture when it came back off the post. If you watch Zlatan after he misses you can see he is saying something to himself, GMS wonder if it was something like “kick ball in goal”.
