Former World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio was released from his contract with WWE last week.
This alone was no surprise to the average WWE fan, who have been monitoring the companies building financial issues. But it seems the way Del Rio was let go by the company has been taken as an insult by many other superstars in and around the business.
Former WCW and WWE superstar Konnan tweeted his support for Del Rio yesterday, he said:"Should be no surprise what happened to Del Rio..There has always been rampant racism in the industry from subtle to obvious..#Putos"
The circumstances of Del Rio's released were believed to be because the Social Media manager made a racist comment about the Mexican and Del Rio then slapped him.
Because of the way the release was made public, as the main news on WWE's website and because Del Rio was referred to by his ring name and not his real name, which is common practice for WWE superstar releases. And given the tweet that WWE sent out from their official account which read: "(1/2) @VivaDelRio is responsible for his own actions. If you’re angry at anyone, be angry at Alberto. (2/2) There’s no excuse for a pro athlete not to conduct themselves in a professional manner."
Many thought that this was a work by WWE, a new way of using social media and the smart internet fans to their advantage, but Konnan was asked by a fan how he could be sure this wasn't a work and he replied: "because I talked to ADR and racism is still rampant in the industry"
He also used his social media platform to back fellow Mexican wrestler, Rey Mysterio. His contract with the company was up months ago but Vince McMahon was able to extend it automatically because of the time Rey has had off injured.
The former World Champion has now stopped cashing his cheques from WWE in the hope he can gain an early release and Konnan tweeted his support: "@WWE u released @RRWWE u f***ed @VivaDelRio now #Free @reymysterio #Putos #NoValenVergs"
"Ray deserves more respect, he's given WWE everything bar the kitchen sink #FreeRey"
Rey hasn't been seen on WWE tv in the past few months and there doesn't seem to be any talk of bringing him back with Kalisto due to be brought up from NXT now that there is no Mexican superstar in WWE.
As for the Del Rio situation, tonight is the first live event since his release, so it may be wise to wait and see if anything about the former Champion is mentioned, WWE may be predictable but sometimes they do trick the WWE universe into thinking there is a story when there isn't.
