Louis van Gaal will wait and see if Manchester United can land German defender Mats Hummels in this transfer window before moving for another defender this summer, according to The Daily Star.
The same report has suggested that this is good news for Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, with the Blues hoping to land Roma centre-half Mehdi Benatia.
The Red Devils have been linked with a move for the Borussia Dortmund defender throughout the summer, as Van Gaal looks to add experience to his back-line. Hummels, though, was recently announced the new captain of Dortmund, meaning it could prove difficult for United to land him in this window.
But, that hasn't appeared to put United's Dutch boss off, with this report suggesting that he's ready to wait and see if the club can land the World Cup winner. Manchester United fans will be desperate to see defensive reinforcements before the close of the transfer window, following the departures of Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra.
With the likes of Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling currently at the Theatre of Dreams, Van Gaal will be hoping to add some experience to his defence, as his side look to improve after last season's disastrous campaign.
And, with Van Gaal reportedly waiting on Hummels, it appears that Chelsea are now in the driving seat to land Benatia, with the Red Devils having previously shown interest in the defender. Blues boss Jose Mourinho is seemingly determined to replace flamboyant Brazilian defender David Luiz who signed for French moneybags Paris Saint-Germain earlier on this summer.
Mourinho already has youngster Kurt Zouma at his disposal, but the defender could go out on loan, meaning Chelsea are in need of defensive additions. John Terry and Gary Cahill are expected to be Chelsea's main centre-half pairing for the up coming season, but the signing of Benatia would certainly improve the club's defensive line.
It certainly looks set to be an interesting few weeks before the close of the window, with United and Chelsea still on the lookout for possible recruits.
