Italian giants Lazio have made Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar their No.1 transfer target this summer, according to talkSPORT.
Vlaar, who starred at this summer's World Cup, has been linked with a number of teams in recent time, with the same report indicating that the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, Southampton and Juventus are all interested in the player's signature.
It's not surprising that a number of European clubs have been credited with interest in the defender in recent time following the player's fine summer with the Netherlands. Vlaar played a key role in his national side's progression throughout the tournament, and could now be on the move in this transfer window.
His former international boss Louis van Gaal may well have been impressed with him in Brazil, but it remains to be seen as to whether the Manchester United chief makes a move for the Dutchman.
The United boss may well have to battle Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger for the player's signature, with the Gunners boss on the lookout for defensive reinforcements. However, with Southampton also reportedly interested, it appears that Lazio are the team ready to press ahead with a move for the Villa man.
The report has suggested that the Italian outfit have made him their No.1 target as they look to improve their defence ahead of the 2014/15 campaign. It certainly looks set to be a huge battle for the player that rose to prominence in Brazil.
United and Arsenal in need?
With the season just under a week away, Manchester United fans will be hoping the club land at least one defender before the close of the market. The Red Devils have already lost the experienced trio of Jonny Evans, Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, and could do with adding competition to their back-line.
Van Gaal has already implemented the 3-5-2 formation at Old Trafford, and Vlaar has already proved he can play in the system. He'd certainly help the likes of Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling progress at United.
Arsenal, on the other hand, have just seen club captain Thomas Vermaelen depart the Emirates. Calum Chambers has already been signed by the Arsenal chief, but the north London outfit may look to Vlaar as an experienced back-up if the likes of Laurent Koscielny or Per Mertesacker struggle with injury next term.
