Football News

Manchester United are emerging as serious contenders alongside Chelsea in the race to sign Roma defender Mehdi Benatia.

The Red Devils are short of options at the back following the departure of both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, and are on the look out for replacements.

So far they have failed to land Thomas Vermaelen who preferred a move to Barcelona, while top target Mats Hummels is likely to stay put at Borussia Dortmund having been named club captain over the weekend.

While new Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is keen on a deal for Ajax's Daley Blind he will need at least one more centre-back, and that man could be Benatia. Reports in Italy this week say that Chelsea are close to sealing a £30 million deal for the Moroccan international, but the Mirror are reporting that Manchester United are emerging as serious contenders.

With just three weeks of the transfer window remaining, the Red Devils have their work cut out to get all their transfer dealings done in time. It has been reported that Van Gaal wants to sell seven players, and is looking to lure a big name to Old Trafford such as Angel di Maria or Arturo Vidal.
