We’re barely two days removed from Rory McIlroy’s win at the PGA Championship but attention is already turning to the Ryder Cup.
US captain Tom Watson held a press conference at Valhalla yesterday and he refused to rule out Tiger Woods from September’s competition.
“I don't make this comment loosely. He is Tiger Woods and he brings a lot to the team, if he has the ability to play and he's healthy. He brings a lot to the team. And I'd be a fool not to consider him.”
Watson’s team is depleted by injury with Jason Dufner and Matt Kuchar the latest US players to suffer setbacks.
In contrast the Europeans have thrived in 2014 and the 64-year-old admitted Paul McGinley’s team have the edge heading to The Belfry.
“With that said, you look at the European team, and yes, on paper they look stronger than the American team. But our team.... they have got the motivation from 2012 that I'm going to lay on them as I've said in the past. But I think that's a great motivator.”
Amongst all the excitement at Valhalla this past weekend the Meijer LPGA Classic also took place.
Mirim Lee’s putt on the second playoff hole edged out compatriot Inbee Park to secure the 23-year-old’s first victory on Tour.
The ladies now turn their attention to the third major of the year; the Wegmans LPGA Championship, which starts on Thursday.
