Manchester United are in talks to sign Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria, Ajax defender Daley Blind and Sporting Lisbon left-back Marcos Rojo. Manager Louis van Gaal is pushing for the club to sign the £80 million trio within the coming days.
This is according to the Daily Mail, who claim that United are set to significantly bolster their squad ahead of the 2014/15 Premier League campaign which gets underway on Saturday lunchtime.
Woodward in talks with Real Madrid
The same report adds that United’s much-maligned executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward was in Cardiff last night to open talks with Real Madrid, who beat La Liga rivals Sevilla to win the UEFA Super Cup, over the potential transfer of Argentina international Di Maria.
The world-class 26-year-old was expected to join French champions Paris Saint-Germain this summer, but the deal fell through after the Ligue 1 outfit baulked at Real Madrid’s £50 million asking price.
If United are to sign Di Maria, they would need to smash their club-record transfer fee, which was set by £37.1 million Juan Mata in January.
But Woodward is reportedly optimistic that the club can negotiate a more reasonable deal with the Spanish giants, who have spent huge sums of cash to secure the signings of Colombia international James Rodriguez and former Bayern Munich star Toni Kroos this summer.

Van Gaal pushing for defensive reinforcements
Van Gaal is acutely aware that strengthening his defensive options his critical - particularly now that he has implemented a 3-5-2 system at Old Trafford.
Di Maria’s Argentina teammate Rojo is desperate to leave Sporting Lisbon and submitted a formal transfer request on Tuesday in order to force through a move to the Red Devils.
The £15 million-rated 24-year-old impressed at the recent World Cup finals in Brazil and would provide some much-needed competition for United’s £27 million summer signing Luke Shaw.
Blind: Versatile and perfect for United
Blind, meanwhile, is a player who has been constantly linked with Manchester United since Van Gaal was appointed as David Moyes’s successor back in May.
Ajax are resigned to selling the £17 million-rated 24-year-old, who is capable of playing as a left-back, centre-back and defensive midfielder.
Blind excelled last season in the Eredivisie and was subsequently named the 2014 Dutch Footballer of the Year.
And now that Barcelona appear to have lost interest in the Netherlands international, Manchester United are poised to pounce, with the player admitting that it would be extremely difficult to turn down the Red Devils now that Van Gaal is in charge at Old Trafford.
