Arsenal and Liverpool are ready to reignite interest in Toby Alderweireld this summer and could land him for as little as £8million. Tottenham Hotspur are also former admirers of the Belgian and are reportedly interested along with their Premier League rivals.
According to the Daily Express, the Gunners and Reds are both on the lookout for new centre-backs, while Spurs have seen the move for their preferred target stall due to issues over the fee.
It claims all three could be ready to move for Alderweireld as his club, Atletico Madrid, are open to the idea of moving him on in the summer transfer window.
Brendan Rodgers and Arsene Wenger, goes the report, were both keen on the 25-year-old last summer, but he opted to join Atletico in a £6million switch from Ajax in Amsterdam, where he was a product of their prolific youth academy.
Despite Diego Simeone’s side claiming an unlikely league title and getting to the Champions League final for their most successful season in many a year, Alderweireld spent most of it on the bench.
Simeone evidently did not believe he could perform to the standards the former Argentina international requires. Now the Express claim the Vicente Calderon side are looking to offload the Belgium international and are ready to do so for a fee in the region of £8million – well within the budgets of any of the Premier League trio.
Arsenal have just sold club captain Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona, which has left them short in central defence and Wenger admitted he is on the lookout for a replacement, though Greece international Kostas Manolas is also being tipped.
However, the Gunners manager revealed that it may be wise to snap up a player that can play in several positions if he cannot secure a defensive midfielder before the window closes. Alderweireld is primarily a centre-back but played in midfield on a few occasions while at Ajax and also been deployed at full-back for Belgium.
Liverpool’s interest is down to the fact that they have allowed Kolo Toure to join Turkish club Trabzonspor after he fell out of favour under Rodgers as the season progressed.
Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho were the preferred pairing when fit and long-serving Anfield star Daniel Agger was not best pleased at playing second fiddle, which led to him openly courting a move. The arrival of Dejan Lovren from Southampton means the Denmark international is likely to be second choice this term also, so he may need replacing this summer also.
Meanwhile, Tottenham were reportedly in advanced negotiations with Villareal over the possible signing of central defender Mateo Musacchio but talks had halted after negotiations regarding a fee hit a snag.
£17million was the reported number being sought by the Spanish club and the Express report claims Spurs could be ready to revive their Alderweireld interest due to his much lower price tag.
