Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is ready to spend £51m to bring Edinson Cavani to the Emirates Stadium this summer.
That's according to the Daily Express, who report that Wenger is set to bid a club record £51m to beat Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool to the Uruguayan international forward.
PSG for Di Maria
Paris Saint Germain are continuing to explore every possible avenue as they look to bring in Real Madrid attacker Angel Di Maria this summer. At the moment, they are being frustrated by financial fair play obligations that insist they must balance income and expenditure.
Having spent €50m on David Luiz, they need to raise more funds and have reportedly made the likes of Ezequiel Lavezzi, Javier Pastore and Lucas Mora available for transfer.
Might have to be Cavani
But potential recipients are baulking at the asking prices PSG have set for the trio, which has led them to consider selling Cavani. The in-demand forward was signed from Napoli last season, but is not thought to be happy playing second fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea have all been linked with the striker, but Arsenal are now thought to be the most serious contenders. Despite assurances from Wenger that he does not intend to strengthen his attack further, reports continue to claim that he'll sign one more big-money player if one becomes available at the right price.
Best in Europe?
Cavani is one of the best strikers in Europe, and would catapult whichever Premier League club could land him, United, Chelsea, Liverpool or Arsenal, right to the front of the title race.
A £51m bid would break Arsenal's club record, which currently stands at the £42.4m they paid Real Madrid for Mesut Ozil 12 months ago. In the process, Cavani would also become the most expensive signing in Premier League history - Fernando Torres hold the record to a British club (Chelsea).
