Manchester United are yet to submit an offer for Ajax and Holland star Daley Blind, confirms the player's representative.
Reports surfaced on Wednesday morning claiming that both Louis van Gaal and Ed Woodward have stepped up their efforts to sign Blind ahead of the new Premier League season. Deals for Angel di Maria and Marcos Rojo were also high on the agenda.
However, the owner of sports agency Sports-Promotion Rob Jansen, who represents Blind as well as a number of other stars, claims the Eredivisie outfit are yet to receive any formal offers for the utility man.
"There hasn't been any offer for Blind yet," he told NU.nl.
It will be a blow for Manchester United fans, who were hoping the big spending promised at the beginning of the summer was finally getting underway. However, it appears they may have to wait a bit longer.
Despite being rated at between £17 million and £20 million, Blind represents something of a perfect addition for Van Gaal. Capable of playing at left-back, centre-back or defensive midfield, Blind would prove quality cover for several positions that need strengthening at Old Trafford.
With so much money to spend – Woodward has already said Manchester United can break the transfer record if they want – it beggars belief why Van Gaal has not launched an offer for the 24-year-old with the season so close.
Thin squad options
With the Premier League opener against Swansea just days away, Manchester United are set to go into the game with just three recognised centre-backs. Luke Shaw has also been ruled out for a month meaning Ashley Young is set to fill in at wing back.
There is a growing sense that despite sealing deals for Ander Herrera and Shaw, Van Gaal has failed to translate Manchester United's financial power into squad power. With such a crucial season ahead, the Red Devils could be heading down a familiar road again - one that will cost Van Gaal his job.
