Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has ruled out making a £30 million bid for AS Roma centre-back Mehdi Benatia, giving Manchester United the chance to sign the Moroccan.
The 27-year-old has been a wanted man this summer after his consistent performances in Serie A last season, and it has been speculated that United and Chelsea would battle it out for the defender, with both of them prepared to spend up to £30m.
However, Roma boss Rudi Garcia has always been adamant that his star is not for sale, and he admitted that it would take an offer of nearly £50m to get him to accept, but Mourinho has 100% ruled himself out of signing the Moroccan, claiming he does not need any more centre-backs.
The Blues have already spent big this transfer window, signing Diego Costa, Filipe Luis and Cesc Fabregas, all coming from La Liga, but the Portuguese has put to bed the rumours linking the club with Benatia.
"No, we're not interested," Mourinho said. "We have John (Terry), (Gary) Cahill, (Branislav) Ivanovic, (Kurt) Zouma, and we want to integrate (Andreas) Christensen.
"Step by step [for Christensen], training with us, every day, playing a few minutes when it is possible, playing with the Under-21s and training with us as a first-team squad member.
"We are fine. are, we are well set in defence."
Chelsea had the tightest defence in the Premier League last season, and despite losing veteran Ashley Cole and centre-back David Luiz, Mourinho is confident that he has enough talent at his disposal already.
This will now give Manchester United and Louis Van Gaal a major boost in their hunt to land the Moroccan international, but they will have to put their hands in their pockets if they are to persuade Garcia to sell, who has made it clear that he doesn't want to lose too many stars this Summer.
