Adnan Januzaj will wear the iconic number 11 shirt for Manchester United next season, after taking on some advice from its previous owner Ryan Giggs.

The Red Devils officially confirmed their squad numbers for the upcoming 2014/15 Premier League season, confirming speculation that Janzaj would be graduating from the 44 shirt he wore last season to the number that until now had only been worn by Giggs in the Premier League era.

Retired

The Welshman has retired from playing after an illustrious 24 years with Manchester United, taking up a place on the sidelines alongside new boss Louis van Gaal.

The former winger is said to have encouraged Januzaj to take on the number and told him to step up the challenge. The Belgian international is likely to get more game time given the number that he's been handed - and that fact will undoubtedly heap pressure on the talented youngster who broke through last season.

New signings

Elsewhere new boy Luke Shaw has taken up the number three shirt from Patrice Evra who has joined Juventus, while Ander Herrera will wear the number 21 shirt - which has a less than impressive history.

Ángelo Henríquez had the shirt last season and didn't play a single Premier League minute for Manchester United, while previous incumbents include Dong Fangzhuo and Diego Forlan - neither of whom exactly shone at Old Trafford. Fans will be hoping that Herrera can break the mould, something he looks well capable of doing judging by his performances in pre-season.

Empty spaces

Some high profile numbers have been left empty; Rio Ferdinand's number five shirt is unoccupied, as is the iconic number seven. As things stand Manchester United don't have a number nine either, while Nemanja Vidic's number 15 shirt is also vacant.

That is likely to give rise to speculation that some more signings could be on their way to Old Trafford shortly. Arturo Vidal has been linked with a move to Manchester United, along with the likes of Angel di Maria and Mats Hummels.

James Wilson and Tom Lawrence have both been promoted to the first team and will wear the number 49 and number 34 shirts respectively.
