Chelsea and Arsenal have moved a step closer with regards to any intentions they may harbour of landing Real Madrid star Sami Khedira this summer, after it was reported that the La Liga giants are annoyed at the way he has conducted himself in the past few months.

Spanish newspaper Marca claim that Los Blancos are keen to offload the German international this summer, and are waiting for an acceptable proposal to be submitted before discussing negotiations regarding his exit. It’s thought that they are hoping he lowers his wage demands - believed to be around €7m-a-season - so that potential suitors aren’t put off, and expect some sort of bid to be received before the end of the transfer window.

Khedira at Madrid

Despite being generally well liked at the Santiago Bernabeu, Khedira’s position at Madrid has come under immense scrutiny with the recent signing of compatriot Toni Kroos.

With him, Xabi Alonso, Luka Modric and Asier Illarramendi competing for places it looks as though the 27-year-old’s days in the Spanish capital are numbered, and his rejection of a new Madrid contract prior to the World Cup has done little to aid his cause.

In fact Marca believes it has had the opposite effect to what Khedira himself envisaged, with Carlo Ancelotti now open to selling him rather than offering him a new deal. It’s speculated that the former Bundesliga man wanted to use this summer’s international tournament as a platform to get Madrid to hand him a more lucrative contract, but that appears to have backfired somewhat.

Chelsea interest

However it’s not all doom and gloom for the defensive midfielder, and Jose Mourinho remains a keen admirer of his talents. If French newspaper Le 10 Sport are to be believed then The Special One has already contacted Khedira and told him that an improved offer is on the way, meaning that Chelsea are actively aiming to construct a route for him to leave the current European champions.

Despite having already added Francesc Fabregas to his deluge of midfielders this summer, Mourinho knows that the addition of a world-class holding man to form a partnership with Nemanja Matic would give him a virtually perfect trio in the middle of the park, and it makes sense to assume he has targeted Khedira as his last addition for this window.

Arsenal competition

The rumours persist in claiming that Arsene Wenger has interest in the player too, despite the Frenchman’s adamant release that he had no intention of adding him to his books.

Arsenal have spent lavishly this summer to ensure that they’re capable of mixing it with the best once more, and plenty of emphasis from the media has been placed upon the idea that a deep anchor man is being sought to add muscle to the midfield.
