Throughout the past few weeks, with transfer speculation constantly surrounding Old Trafford, the state of Manchester United’s midfield has become one of the football world's main discussion points.
The club have been connected to numerous attacking and defensive midfielders from some of Europe’s strongest clubs, however Ander Herrera is still the only midfield summer signing.
The usual suspects
With first-class midfielders such as Arturo Vidal, Wesley Sneijder and William Carvalho all supposedly on United’s shortlist, it appears imminent that Van Gaal will successfully bring in at least one central midfielder before the upcoming transfer-window deadline. However, how vital is it for United at the moment?
Throughout United’s summer tour, we observed terrific performances from Darren Fletcher, Herrera, Juan Mata and Tom Cleverley.
Is there any need?
With Michael Carrick moving closer to full fitness, and Marouane Fellaini desperate to establish a place in the United squad for this season, it seems as though the Red Devils are capable of challenging for the Premier League title with, or indeed without, a new midfielder.
The creative minds of Mata and Herrera combine superbly with the infamous strike force that is Robin van Persie and newly-appointed captain Wayne Rooney. This combination of midfielders and strikers will pose a terrifying goal-threat to all opponents. It seems as though a defensive-minded player is what’s needed, which is why Vidal is a top contender.
However, throughout United’s tour, Fletcher was excellent, earning him the vice-captain title for this season. If the club buy new midfielders, it will definitely add depth to a new and remarkably youthful squad. However, the players proved on the tour that the squad is determined to work hard and play well in the 2014/15 campaign.
