Manchester United could hijack Arsenal's bid to sign William Carvalho if they fail to land Chilean ace Arturo Vidal, reports the Metro.
The report has suggested that the Red Devils would be hopeful of persuading the Portuguese ace to the Theatre of Dreams, despite Arsenal currently in talks with Sporting Lisbon over a move for the player. It's been suggested that Arsenal have already had an offer of £24 million rejected for the player's services, but it now appears that they could be joined by Manchester United in pursuit of the highly rated midfielder.
It appears, then, that the Red Devils will only enter the market if they are unable to land Louis van Gaal's No.1 target Vidal from Juventus. The Red Devils have been credited with interest in the Serie A star for some time now, but a deal has still not been struck between the two clubs.
Carvalho would certainly offer United a different option in the middle of the park, with Manchester United in need of a tough tackling central-midfielder. United's midfielders struggled to make an impact under David Moyes last term, with the likes of Marouane Fellaini, Ton Cleverley and Co. failing to make an impact, and another midfield addition seems crucial for Van Gaal as his side target success in 2014/15.
The Red Devils have already purchased Spanish ace Ander Herrera, but with Michael Carrick out on the sidelines for the start of the season, United fans will be hoping a midfield signing is imminent.
Arsenal fans will certainly be hoping that Manchester United don't enter the race for Carvalho. The Gunners - unlike United - could offer the Portuguese ace Champions League football next term, and appear desperate to add him to their squad for the up coming Premier League season.
The Gunners have an array of talent in their squad, but are certainly in need of a player of a player in the mould of Carvalho. It remains to be seen, however, as to whether the club can come to a compromise with Sporting after their initial rejection. Arsenal will be desperate to improve on last season's fourth place Premier League finish, and the signing of Carvalho would only help them in their challenge for the title.
