Toby Alderweireld's dad has revealed that his son could leave Atletico Madrid on loan for the 2014/15 season.
This has been reported by The Daily Star, who have suggested that a number of clubs are interested in the player in this summer's transfer window, with Premier League trio Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham all credited with interest.
It appears, then, that Alderweireld's dad - who is also his agent - is trying to steer a move for his son before the close of the window. Speaking to Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad, Vic Alderweireld has insisted that his son is desperate to play first-team football and doesn't want to spend another season sitting on the bench.
He said: “Toby wants to play, going out on loan would be the best option. If there is a solution, Atletico won’t stand in his way.
“Since last year, we’ve had several discussions on this issue and Atletico understands that we don’t think it makes sense to leave Toby on the bench for another year.”
Needed in north London
It's not surprising that some of the elite clubs in the Premier League have been linked with a move for the Belgian defender after he proved his credentials at this summer's World Cup. And, with the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham in need of defensive reinforcements, the north London duo could yet battle each other for the player's services.
Arsenal, who have already landed Calum Chambers in this transfer window, are still in need of improvement after selling former club captain Thomas Vermaelen to Spanish giants Barcelona. Tottenham, on the other hand, could do with improving their back line as they go in search of Champions League qualification.
Liverpool fans, though, will be hoping that Brendan Rodgers can take the Atletico man to Merseyside as the club embark upon a Champions League fuelled season. The Reds will also be looking to go one better in the Premier League after securing a runners up spot last time out.
It's no secret that Liverpool struggled at the back last term, and Alderweireld would certainly improve the club's back-line ahead of the new season. A loan deal may well suit the Premier League trio, with the 25-year-old on the lookout for first-team football.
