Manchester United are the only option for Angel Di Maria if the Real Madrid star is serious about leaving the club this summer.
That's according to Spanish newspaper Marca, who report that United are the only team left with a serious interest in the Argentina international, and with the transfer funds available to match Madrid's asking price and Di Maria's wage demands.
Super Cup snub
Di Maria, valued at €60m (£50m), was not used by Carlo Ancelotti during Real Madrid's 2-0 Super Cup win over Sevilla at the Cardiff City Stadium earlier this week, and along with Sami Khedira, is expected to leave the Bernabeu before the transfer deadline next month.
Paris Saint Germain were the frontrunners, and there was interest from Monaco at one stage too, but now United are the last club left. Financial fair play obligations scuppered PSG's hopes, as they have already splashed out €50m on David Luiz. They need to sell before they can buy again.
Not keen on Monaco
And Di Maria reportedly rejected an opportunity to speak to Monaco after the club had a bid accepted for the attacking midfielder. Monaco, never short of cash anyway, have money burning a hole in their pocket following the €63m sale of James Rodriguez to Real Madrid.
United boss Louis Van Gaal is a big fan of the Argentine, and mentioned him by name at a United press conference earlier this month.
Van Gaal a fan of Di Maria
When talking about the quality of wingers at his disposal at Old Trafford, Van Gaal said he did not have "anybody of the ability of Angel Di Maria or Cristiano Ronaldo."
It's thought Van Gaal would be looking to revert back to his preferred 4-3-3 formation should he manage to land Di Maria. He says his hands at tied at the moment by the team available to him.
The squad suits a 3-5-2 set-up but the Dutchman has traditionally played with wingers, and Di Maria would give him that flexibility.
