Gary Ballance Diary: Looking forward to Cricket United

I’m really looking forward to this Test at the Oval and especially Saturday as it’s Cricket United where the ground will turn blue for the day in aid of three charities.

I was involved in something very similar in Sydney and it’s different over here because I’ve not been involved in one yet. It’s going to be a good day and I’m really looking forward to it.

It will be great to walk out on Saturday and see the ground blue and I’ve heard Waitrose have donated 10,000 shirts to be sold for Cricket United, I’m sure the Oval will be blue and it will be quite a sight and a great thing to be involved in.

As part of the cause which raises money for the PCA Benevolent Fund, Lord’s Taverners and Chance to Shine a lot of the lads have been drawing each other!

I thought Rooty’s picture of the squad was pretty good, he is quite talented at art and I thought it was quite a good laugh. I was pretty pleased with the body he drew on me, it’s probably better than in real life but I think Rooty has been generous.

Sam Robson also decided to draw me topless as a joke and it’s all for a good cause and it’s all a bit of fun so everyone has had a bit of a laugh and I hope the fans can appreciate that and have a giggle themselves.

Onto the serious stuff and we have been much improved of late, it was good to get the win in Southampton but one win doesn’t count for anything so it was nice to put in another good performance at Old Trafford. To get two wins in a row gives us a series lead at 2-1 with one game to go so hopefully one good performance will help us win the series.

Ove the last couple of games Cooky and Belly have come into form and they are obviously great players for England and have been for the last 10 years. They have scored so many runs so it’s good for them to score runs again and build a platform for the batters to build those big scores which then gives the bowlers a great chance to run in and put the batsmen under pressure.

I don’t think we’ve played too bad if I’m honest, we’ve played good in parts but not for the full game and you won’t win Test Matches like that.

In the last two games we’ve put it all together and we’ve
played good cricket the whole way through. We haven’t really lost a session and
that helps to win a Test you have to play good cricket all the way through because
one bad session could lose you the game. You have to capitalize on those good
starts like we have been doing.

Another huge positive is the competition for places in this team, it’s great to have Jimmy and Broady leading the attack with plenty of good young bowlers around. Jords and Woaksey have obviously done well, Stokesy started the series and now Finny is back which is great to see because he’s already had a good career in the England shirt. Competition for places is healthy and always needed in a five match series.

We’re all confident if we play to the best of our abilities again we can win this series 3-1.
