Not a week goes by without a former WWE superstar getting linked with a wrestling return. CM Punk is the name that usually pops up in these types of situations, but the name this week that is set to dominate the headlines is Kurt Angle.
The former WWE superstar and current TNA wrestler was one of the most respected and popular stars to have graced WWE, and now reports suggest he is trying to persuade WWE executives that he deserves another shot.
One of the reasons Kurt Angle was so successful in WWE was his believability. As a former Olympic gold medalist, the sight of seeing him dominate such animals as Brock Lesnar was realistic and believable.
Kurt Angle is still currently contracted to TNA wrestling, but that agreement is due to expire in September. According to reports by Wrestling Observe Newsletter, Angle is desperate for a WWE return, but it has been suggested that Vince McMahon will need to be persuaded to change his mind after Angle's numerous struggles with the law.
Can he persuade McMahon?
"Angle is trying to get WWE executives to take him back on a contract that looks similar to the deal Shawn Michaels had near the end of his in-ring career. Michaels worked all the ‘big’ shows, such as PPVs, but rarely worked house shows and was on limited TV," it has been reported.
"As previously noted, Vince McMahon has gone on record saying he was weary of having Angle under contract, especially given his history of demons.
"McMahon’s anxieties about re-signing Angle exist due to his past struggles. McMahon is terrified about having an Olympic gold medalist do something tragic to himself or someone else while under contract and representing the WWE banner."
Will he return?
Whether or not Kurt Angle does indeed get his wish of a return to WWE remains to be seen, but there are plenty of reasons why the former WWE superstar shouldn't get an opportunity.
Multiple arrests for DUI, accusations of abuse and assaults, not to mention problems with drugs. It will be interesting to see where Kurt Angle ends up beyond September. Watch this space.
