Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has admitted that he's surprised Manchester United didn't swoop for either of Cesc Fabregas or Toni Kroos in this transfer window.
As reported by The Express, Scholes has also insisted that this season's title race will be between Manchester City and Chelsea, with his former club battling it out with Liverpool and Arsenal for the final two Champions League places.
Scholes, then, has predicted that Chelsea will be the only team competing with current holders City for the title. Manchester United, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back after a disastrous season under David Moyes which saw the club end in seventh place in the Premier League.
The former United midfielder has admitted that it shouldn't be too difficult for the Red Devils to improve upon last season, with Louis van Gaal set to lead the team into a new era.
Scholes said: "I think the title is between City and Chelsea, they've both made decent signings.
"The next two places are between United, Liverpool and Arsenal. United will be looking for a better season than the last and that shouldn't be too difficult.
Lack of signings
The United legend has also admitted that he's surprised that Manchester United haven't added further in the middle of the park. The Red Devils have landed Spanish ace Ander Herrera in this transfer window, but Scholes expected the club to be in the market for Fabregas and Kroos, who joined Chelsea and Real Madrid respectively.
"I'm sure Van Gaal would have liked to have signed more players. Midfield is where I thought they might have brought in a couple.
"(Toni) Kroos goes for £20million and (Cesc) Fabregas to Chelsea, I thought they would have been in for those type of players but it doesn't look like they were," Scholes added.
"Remember the players they have lost - Rio, Vidic, Evra, Giggs. Massive playrs who have won 30 titles between them.
"It's only Shaw and Herrera who have come in and (Juan) Mata and (Marouane) Fellaini who haven't won the league. I just worry that City and Chelsea have a bit too much for them."
Scholes will certainly take an interest in United's opening Premier League clash of the season, as the Red Devils play host to Welsh outfit Swansea City. United will be looking to secure all three points against the Swans, but it remains to be seen as to whether the club make any more movements on the transfer scene before the close of the window.
