Bayern Munich’s new-found interest in Real Madrid youngster Raphael Varane may force Jose Mourinho to step up his efforts in the transfer market, according to reports.
French newspaper Le 10 Sport, building on speculation in German publication Bild, claims that Pep Guardiola has turned to Varane in the wake of the injury sustained by Javi Martinez, and is now interested in signing the France international before the end of the summer transfer window.
Of course Chelsea have had a long-running interest in the defender, and he’s widely regarded to be one of Jose Mourinho’s favourites from his time in charge at the Santiago Bernabeu. That’s why The Special One will move swiftly to get ahead of his old arch-enemy Guardiola, and could offer Petr Cech in a swap deal to convince Madrid to part ways.
Varane at Madrid
Neither club looks likely to land Varane, as his status at Madrid is one of an incredible promising asset. Having become a first-team regular since his switch from Rennes the 21-year-old has improved with each passing season, and is now deemed to be the heir to Sergio Ramos.
However his position behind Pepe and Ramos in the pecking order under Carlo Ancelotti could have the youngster considering his own future and, unless the Italian boss makes a big call in dropping one of his two experienced defensive leaders, he may be forced to answer questions regarding Varane’s opportunities.
Following Bayern’s defeat in the German Super Cup at the hands of Borussia Dortmund, the pressure is as intense as ever on Guardiola heading into the Spaniard’s second campaign in charge at the Allianz Arena. Though Bayern eased to the Bundesliga title last term they were embarrassingly knocked out of the Champions League by Real, and questions were subsequently asked about how strong they would be in the long-run.
Now, having strengthened with the addition of Robert Lewandowski, Guardiola is moving to solidify his defence, and the addition of Varane would go someway to doing just that.
The German giants will face strong competition from Mourinho though, who has made it clear with his recent endeavours in the market that he wants to find a long-term replacement for John Terry.
What’s more he’ll have Cech to use as a bargaining tool if he opts to make Thibaut Courtois his No.1, as the Czech international will seek a move if he’s not first-choice.
