Liverpool put in a below-par performance to see off Southampton by two goals to one in the opening fixture of their 2014/15 Premier League campaign.
Raheem Sterling put the home side in front after an excellent ball by Jordan Henderson after 23 minutes. Southampton responded just after the second half commenced after a neat one-two between Nathaniel Clyne and Dusan Tadic saw the right-back equalise.
Liverpool left it until the 79th minute to grab a winner as Sterling was involved again as his header found Daniel Sturridge for a clever finish from close range.
Simon Mignolet 8 - made some solid saves including a late shot from Morgan Schneiderlin that was tipped onto the crossbar. Commanded his box well and confidently collected crosses on all but one occasion.
Javier Manquillo 7 - hard in the tackle however he was caught out of position on several occasions and his inexperience shone.
Dejan Lovren 8 - superb debut in a Red shirt as he lead the back four naturally. He read the game well on several occasions and won important tackles and headers. Maybe could have done slightly better for Southampton goal.
Martin Skrtel 7 - looked a lot more confident than last season however he is still failing to close down the opposition when they drive at goal
Glen Johnson 7 - decent enough game for him down the left hand side however he gave the ball away needlessly at times.
Steven Gerrard 7 - only really impacted the game when Liverpool were under pressure, making a lot of key challenges and clearances. Would have likes to have saw the Reds skipper help push forward in the first half.
Lucas Leiva 5 - did nothing all game and should have followed Clyne for his goal.
Jordan Henderson 7 - superb ball to set up first goal and worked extremely hard all game. However he went missed in the first half at times when an extra man up top was need and should have done better with second half attempt.
Philippe Coutinho 5 - completely out-played by the Southampton midfield and even when he did find space with the ball he failed to capitalise.
Raheem Sterling 8 - took his goal well and it was an intelligent header to find Sturridge for the second. Didn't show enough of his rapid pace we have saw at times, mainly due to lack of service.
Daniel Sturridge 7 - lacked service up top however always looked dangerous when he had the ball at his feet. Took his goal extremely well.
Subs - Allen 7, Lambert 7
Fraser Forster 7 - made a few key saves for the Saints however wasn't tested all that much throughout the match.
Nathaniel Clyne 9 (MOM) - very impressive on the right-hand side of defence. He caused Liverpool mayhem on several occasions and took his goal extremely well. Also defended on par as going forward keeping Sterling quiet at times.
Maya Yoshida 7 - solid at the back making some good challenges and headers however caught out with second goal.
Jose Fonte 7 - performed much like Yoshida, solid but should have done better for the first Liverpool goal as opposed to the second.
Ryan Bertrand 8 - great performance as he kept queit Glen Johnson's overlapping runs as well as getting forward himself.
Steve Davies 7 - linked up well with both strikers however should have put Saints into the lead at 1-1.
Victor Wanyama 7- a great effort by keeping Phillipe Coutinho quite for when he was on the pitch, not allowing the Brazilian any space however should have cleared cross better which lead to the winning goal.
Morgan Schneiderlin 8 - he was busy throughout, creating chances and keeping Coutinho out of the game. Unlucky to be denied a late equaliser.
Dusan Tadic 7 - quiet in parts however he held of Lovren well to assist for Southampton's only goal.
James Ward-Prowse 7 - fantastic set-pieces and crosses throughout the game and he was busy for the complete duration
Graziano Pelle 6 - found it tough against the pair of Lovren and Skrtel, very much saw how tough the Premier League will be for him
Subs - Long 6, Isgrove 7
