Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is keen to sign Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani to bolster his attacking options and prevent Manchester United signing Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria in the process.
This is according to Catalan newspaper Sport - and brought to our attention by the Metro - who claim that Wenger has accelerated his interest in £51 million-rated Cavani because he does not want United to strengthen with the acquisition of Argentina international Di Maria.
United intent on signing Di Maria
The Red Devils have stepped up their efforts to sign Di Maria following their shock 2-1 defeat to Swansea City on Saturday - and are ready to spend upwards of £100 million to bring the world-class winger to Old Trafford.
Di Maria, if the deal goes through, would earn £200,000-a-week over the course of five years with Manchester United.

Arsenal can prevent transfer
Arsenal, fearing United will instantly become a competitive force again with the addition of Di Maria, have the power to prevent the transfer from happening - by signing Uruguay international Cavani from PSG.
PSG are in direct competition with Manchester United for Di Maria; however, due to UEFA's Financial Fair Play regulations, the French champions need to offload one of their key players before they can secure the Real Madrid star's services.
Arsenal must spend club-record fee for Cavani
Arsenal would need to pay a club-record fee to sign Chelsea target Cavani - and Wenger is reportedly happy to do so in order to seal a deal for one of the world's most revered number nines. If the transfer goes through, PSG would reinvest the money on Di Maria, who reportedly favours a move to the Parc des Princes over Old Trafford.
PSG are believed to be more willing to offload Argentina international Ezeqiuel Lavezzi rather than Cavani - particularly now that star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been ruled out for a minimum of four weeks with a muscle injury - but the latter would command a significantly higher transfer fee.
PSG could reluctantly sell Cavani
Liverpool currently lead the race for Lavezzi, and it's thought that a £16 million offer may be enough for Brendan Rodgers to bring the 29-year-old to Anfield before the transfer window closes on September 1.
However, an influx of £16 million will not be sufficient for PSG to sign Di Maria and ensure their books remain balanced.
The Ligue 1 outfit, therefore, will seriously need to consider the idea of selling Cavani and keeping Lavezzi as Ibrahimovic's back-up instead.
