Manchester United are on the verge of signing Marcos Rojo after the Sporting Lisbon defender confirmed on Argentine radio that he is set to move to Old Trafford.

The London Metro reports how the World Cup finalist has been a top target for the Premier League giants all summer, and now they finally appear close to securing his signature.

New Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal is in desperate need of defensive reinforcements before the transfer window closes, and Rojo'a ability to play at centre-back and on the left flank makes him a valuable acquisition.

Manchester United are understood to have agreed a player-plus-cash fee with the Portuguese outfit, which will see want-away winger Luis Nani return to his former club on loan for the 2014/15 campaign.

The £15.9 million that Manchester United will part with should be viewed as an acceptable deal, particularly when considering the fact that £27 million signing Luke Shaw is out injured for the first month of the season.

Valuable versatility

Rojo will be able to fill in at left wing-back, a position that was occupied by Ashley Young during Manchester United's 2-1 home defeat against Swansea City on the opening day of the season.

The Argentina international is untested in England so far, but has excelled with Sporting in the Primeira Liga and turned in a series of impressive performances in Brazil over the summer.

After days of negotiations between the two clubs - complicated by the player's third party ownership - an agreement has finally been mutually reached, and Rojo will now travel to Manchester to undergo a medical before signing a five-year deal.

Marcos Rojo quotes:

"I'm living this like a dream," he told Argentina radio. "[Manchester] United are a fantastic club.

"I spoke to Juan Veron about his opportunity and he have me some advice. It wasn't easy to leave Sporting."

The Rojo deal is expected to be the first of a number of late transfer window moves for Manchester United, with Van Gaal allegedly demanding at least four new players to be recruited before the deadline in just under two weeks' time.

His lack of squad depth was apparent when nine first-team players were unavailable for selection against Swansea on Saturday, forcing the Dutchman to hand debuts to two Academy graduates, Tyler Blackett and Jesse Lingard.

Increased competition for places should help improve Manchester United's prospects for the season ahead, with a box-to-box midfielder now the main priority over the next 13 days.
