Manchester United have rejected Hull City’s attempts to sign Danny Welbeck, forcing The Tigers to turn their interests elsewhere with regards to capturing another striker.
Last week it was claimed that Steve Bruce had honed in on the out-of-sorts England international, and was looking to make him a part of his setup ahead of his team’s Europa League adventure. However the Daily Mirror now claims that the Hull boss has been unsuccessful in his endeavours, and it looks as though Welbeck will now be staying at Old Trafford.
The rumours concerning Hull’s intentions to sign the United forward hit fever pitch amidst speculation that Louis van Gaal had informed him his first-team opportunities would be limited in the forthcoming campaign. Welbeck has to compete with the likes of Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney for a starting berth, as well as having Javier Hernandez to contend with for the backup spot.
What’s more, the same report from the Mirror states that what Bruce covets most is an Englishman to lead his attacking lineup, presumably as the purchase of one allays concerns over the ability to settle in. A £14 million offer was said to be being prepared, though the prospect has failed to turn Van Gaal’s head.
Welbeck at United
Despite being able to double up as a winger, Welbeck has yet to enjoy a consistent run in the United first-team when the squad is at full strength. The 23-year-old continues to be a regular under Roy Hodgson on the national front, but the competition at United is fierce - despite the team’s recent shortcomings - and as such he’s struggled to force his way into the picture.
Consequently many were tipping him to be included in the host of players Van Gaal will look to flog before the end of the transfer window, with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal having been loosely linked with him over the past few months. Yet it looks as though the Dutchman wants to keep Welbeck for the foreseeable future, as he looks to turn the club’s fortunes around.
Following the rejection on the Welbeck front Bruce is now said to be considering a move for Vincent Aboubakar, who is currently plying his trade in Ligue 1 with FC Lorient. The Cameroon striker is thought to be keen on a move to England, and his strength up top will duly aid Hull in their attempts to build on the relative success of last term.
