Manchester United have been blasted over their pursuit of Sporting Lisbon defender Marcos Rojo, who isn't good enough to ply his trade at Old Trafford according to South American football expert Tim Vickery.
The Argentinian defender is on the verge of becoming Louis van Gaal's first major signing of the summer, with a €20 million deal believed to be close.
He is expected to fly into Manchester tomorrow in order to undergo a medical and the deal may even be announced before the end of the week, while the 24-year-old has been quoted on Argentinian radio confirming his move.
“It feels like a dream, to be a Manchester United player. Leaving Sporting wasn’t easy,” he is reported to have said.
It has been a frustrating window for Manchester United so far and they've yet to make a signing since the double deal for Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera in the last week of June - and although that looks likely to change shortly, not everyone is impressed.
Speaking on TalkSPORT, Vickery expressed his doubt over the deal, insisting that although Rojo enjoyed a successful World Cup, he isn't the level of player that Manchester United require to compete at the top again.
"Louis van Gaal is clearly thinking in terms of having a back three in his armoury and he might think Marcos Rojo ticks the boxes as someone who can play at left-back, can play centre-back, and therefore would be comfortable left-side of a back three," he said.
"But two months ago, certainly before the World Cup, no one really imagined Rojo as a player of Manchester United's calibre.
"He did well in the World Cup and his market value has obviously risen as a result, but I'm having to get it round my head a little bit the idea he might be wearing the Manchester United shirt because, certainly until recently, I didn't really see him as that calibre of player."
Although Vickery's comments are likely to cause concern amongst the Manchester United faithful, the fact they are close to completing a deal with the close of the transfer window looming will come as a relief.
Van Gaal is believed to be targeting more defensive reinforcements, with Daley Blind linked with a switch to Old Trafford, while a winger could also be on his radar. Juan Cuadrado of Fiorentina and Angel di Maria of Real Madrid have been the names suggested in recent weeks.
The Rojo deal should mark the start of a frantic period of activity for the Red Devils as they look to bolster their squad in order to avoid a repeat of their record low Premier League finish last season.
They got off to the worst possible start in their first game of the season, losing 2-1 to Swansea at Old Trafford on Saturday.
