Chelsea have not made a €44m (£35m) bid for Sporting's William Carvalho, claims the Portuguese club.
Portuguese newspaper A Bola has an exclusive from Sporting that claims reports in England that suggest Carvalho has been the subject of a bid from Chelsea are wide of the mark.
The Daily Mail had claimed Chelsea had made a €44m offer for the Portugal international, who has also been heavily linked with Manchester United and Arsenal.
Carvalho travelled to the World Cup with Portugal but played a limited role from the bench for Paulo Bento's side. But he was one of the best players in the Portuguese top flight last season, attracting scouts from the Premier League.
United scouted him as many as 10 times over the course of the campaign, while Chelsea and Arsenal are the most recent Premier League clubs reportedly eyeing up the 22-year-old midfielder.
Chelsea sent officials to watch him at the weekend, and came away impressed. The Blues are looking for a replacement for John Obi Mikel, who is not expected to play a big role this season. He may even be sold if Chelsea can find a buyer.
Arsenal are also seeking a defensive minded midfielder, and have been linked with Carvalho along with Real Madrid's Sami Khedira and Bayer Leverkusen's Lars Bender. Arsene Wenger has money to spend and has hinted at significant activity before the transfer deadline.
It's all gone quiet on the William Carvalho to Manchester United front though. They were thought to be the lead contenders before the World Cup, but their interest has cooled as Louis Van Gaal prefers Arturo Vidal and Kevin Strootman.
