Liverpool are preparing a formal bid for Fulham wonderkid Patrick Roberts, according to Goal.com.
The report has suggested that the Merseyside outfit want to bring the youngster to Anfield in this transfer window, with the intention of loaning him back to the Championship outfit for the 2014/15 season.
Roberts' rise in English football really took off last season as he made his Premier League debut in March against Manchester City. As well as starring in England's elite division, the youngster played a key role for England as they won the European Under-17 Championship earlier this year.
Roberts is extremely versatile, too - he can play out-wide or in the No.10 position and is a threat all across the attacking line. And, it now appears that the 17-year-old - who is a Liverpool fan - could join the Reds, despite being under contract at Fulham until the summer of 2016.
It appears, however, that Brendan Rodgers could face competition in attempting to bring the highly rated teenager to Anfield. Liverpool's Premier League rivals Manchester United and Chelsea have both been credited with interest in the starlet in recent time, so there could still be a major transfer battle for his signature before the close of the window.
Rodgers, though, appears determined to bring Roberts to Merseyside, and the same report has suggested that the Reds boss will use the way he's handled Raheem Sterling's progression as a way of convincing Roberts to join the club.
Of course, it's unlikely that the youngster will star for one of the elite sides in the Premier League in the immediate future, but he may well be worth the investment for the long term. It appears that the Liverpool boss is planning for the future, and the likes of Sterling and Roberts could play a starring role at the club for many years to come.
Liverpool do, however, have to secure the signing of the starlet first, and could yet take on their Premier League rivals Chelsea and United in the race for the player's signature. It certainly looks set to be a busy couple of final weeks in the transfer window, and Fulham may well be bracing themselves for a bid for their finest young talent.
