Johnny Manziel is not ready to start in the NFL. He has been solid during the pre-season so far, but the rookie quarterback is still lightyears away from his desired destination.
But what we have to remember is that Johnny Manziel should be playing his junior season in College Football. He is only 21 years old, so there's no wonder why he's way off the pace.
Not as bad as you think
However, just because Manziel hasn't set the world a light in his first two pre-season games does not mean he is behind the eight ball at all.
One of the most successful quarterbacks in the last two seasons in the NFL has been Colin Kaepernick, and the San Francisco 49ers QB started his NFL career disastrously.
Kaepernick was only successful in doing one thing in his first pre-season in the NFL, and that was turning over the ball.
Kaepernick was terrible
If a completion rate of 48.0 per cent wasn't good enough, Kaepernick threw five interceptions, was sacked eight times and fumbled the ball twice.
Johnny Manziel compares pretty well with Colin Kaepernick on these statistics, and you could say that the Cleveland Browns quarterback has already surpassed Kaepernick on his way to a better rookie pre-season than the 49ers signal caller.
The fact that Kaepernick has significantly improved since then and is now the starting quarterback of the 49ers, having led them to the Super Bowl two years ago, shows the sky is the limit for any quarterback.
Kaepernick never even threw a touchdown during his rookie season and had to wait until the later stages of his second season to get a start in a Niner's jersey.
Manziel should be benched
The Browns may benefit from putting Manziel on the bench for a season before chucking him out to the wolves on NFL regular season gameday. The 49ers certainly benefitted from that with Kaepernick.
But if these stats tell you anything it's that Manziel is more ready for an NFL start than Kaepernick was during his rookie season.
