Andre Schurrle facing defining season at Chelsea

Andre Schurrle opened his account for the season, as Chelsea got off the mark in the Premier League with an explosive comeback victory over Burnley.

Getting on the end of an exquisite through ball from new boy Cesc Fabregas, Schurrle calmly slotted into the far corner past the onrushing Tom Heaton.

He struggled to hold down a place in Mourinho's first team last season, and started only 16 games. However, he showed bursts of what he can do, as seen when he bagged three against Fulham in March.

Inconsistency

But that was his problem, it was only in bursts.

In the fixture directly after his hat-trick, he started in Chelsea's 4-0 victory over Tottenham, and was subbed off just after the hour mark after failing to really get beyond the Spurs back line.

He struggled to put together a run of impressive performances which would really give Mourinho a reason to give him a run of fixtures.

With the likes of Willian, Salah and Oscar not guaranteed a place in the attacking trio that Chelsea play behind the striker, playing a good, or even fantastic game here and there isn't particularly good enough with such a wealth of experience available.

High hopes

At only 23 years old, to say this is a 'make or break' season for the German would be harsh.

It does though, seem as if this season would be the one to define his role at the club. He could be a decent impact player, brought on to run at tired defenders, or he could really play an important role in the side.

Schurrle, who was signed from Bayern Leverkusen for £18.7 million last summer, possesses great pace, a very direct running style and constantly makes the type of runs that someone like, I don't know, Fabregas? could pick out.

It was evident at Burnley the potential for the two to link up, and will be an interesting thing to look out for as the season unfolds.

Chelsea face Leicester at home next, and it looks as if Schurrle will get his chance again.

Chelsea's well documented problems against the 'lesser' teams in the league last season, means that a good performance against the likes of Burnley and Leicester, will go down as well as an equally good show at Man City.

If the German can put in a real good show against the newly promoted side on Saturday , it may be a sign of a real solid season on the horizon.
