Arsenal have put forward a fresh £20 million bid for William Carvalho in an attempt to ward off Manchester United and Chelsea.
The Gunners made an offer earlier this summer that was said by the Express to be £24 million in instalments.
However this is a new offer and thought to be money upfront which is what Sporting Lisbon, Carvalho's current club, want.
The talented Portuguese defensive midfielder has stirred various reports amongst Premier League clubs recently, in the view that various top teams want his signature.
United have signed Luke Shaw and Herrera this summer but clearly require more quality after their dismal result at home to Swansea on the weekend.
United's director of football, Ed Woodward, has come under massive scrutiny recently, with reports suggesting his performance in attracting big signings to Old Trafford has not been good enough.
It is hard to see where Carvalho would fit in at Chelsea seeing as Mourinho has plenty of options in the defensive midfield position - Ramires, Nemanja Matic and John Obi Mikel are all categorised as that type of player.
Impressive new Gunners
Wenger's start to the season has been fairly good considering how impressive his signings have been.
Alexis Sanchez's pace looks more than likely to cause any team a problem, but Calum Chambers has arguably had more of an impact playing at the heart of Arsenal's defence. His maturity and composure shown, despite only being 19-years-old, has been phenomenal and he made various high quality tackles to deny Besiktas last night in the very important Champions League qualifying first leg.
Arsenal will be without Aaron Ramsey for the second leg at the Emirates next Tuesday and face a tough away trip to Everton on the weekend. The arrival of Carvalho will be a boost for Wenger if his team can land his signature.
