Arsenal are reported to have placed Winston Reid of West Ham under consideration in their bid to recruit a central defender, an area in which they are lacking depth, before the fast approaching transfer deadline.
The departure of Thomas Vermaelen, who joined Barcelona for £15 million, has left Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny as the club’s only senior centre-backs and, although Calum Chambers has performed well in this position, further back-up is required.
Reid is a player to have been linked with Arsenal before and, according to The Times, the New Zealand international is being monitored given the uncertainty of his long-term future at the Boleyn Ground.
The 26-year-old is out of contract at the end of this season and, although West Ham are desperate for him to stay, Reid has yet to provide a clear indication that he is willing to commit to the club.
Reid situation uncertain
Speculation of interest from Arsenal will only fuel suggestions that Reid will pursue a free transfer when he is available to do so, but a proposed exit this summer would still appear to be rather unlikely.
West Ham would, of course, avoid losing Reid for nothing should they take the decision to sell in the next week or so, but their own defensive concerns would mean sale will surely not be sanctioned at the present time.
Reid is the only recognised centre-half currently available to Sam Allardyce, with James Tomkins injured and James Collins suspended, and the club are looking to reinforce this department rather than weaken it.
Watch: The latest Arsenal transfer news
It will, however, be interesting to see what stance the West Ham owners will take if Reid requests to join Arsenal and suitable replacements have already been signed. They would still be loath to see him depart, but the opportunity to wipe out some of their own spending this summer may be an opportunity too good to refuse.
Arsenal, meanwhile, have also been credited with an interest in Matija Nastasic of Manchester City, while Greece international Kostas Manolas would appear the most likely candidate to arrive at the Emirates Stadium as Vermaelen’s replacement.
